EUGENE, Ore.– Emeralds right hander Erik Cabrera entered his 10th start of the season still looking for his first victory. In the top of the 1st inning he walked the leadoff man Ian Parmley only to come back and strike out the next two hitters. Parmley stole second base for his 14th theft of the year and he scored when Anthony Torres made an errant throw on an L.B. Dantzler ground ball. Vancouver added another run in the 2nd, when Dan Arcila belted a solo shot off of the Budweiser sign in right center field.
The Canadians made it three straight innings with a run when Dickie Thon Jr. scored on a wild pitch after singling with one out. Cabrera would finish four innings allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks. Kyle Lloyd came out of the bullpen in the 5th inning and gave up a two-run homer to Brenden Kalfus and it was 5-0 Vancouver.
Lefty starter Shane Dawson threw four shutout innings for the Canadians in his NWL debut. Eugene managed just one runner into scoring position all night and it came by way of back-to-back walks in the 2nd inning. Four Vancouver hurlers combined for 14 strikeout while limiting the Ems to just four base hits.
The Canadians added another two-run blast in the 8th when L.B. Dantzler knocked out his third home run of the series making it 7-0. Chuck Ghysels came on for a perfect 9th inning to seal the deal for Vancouver. The Emeralds took the series 3-2 and made it a winning homestand taking 5 of 8.
They head out on the road for 5 games in the Tri-Cities before the 3-day all-star break. You can hear all the action with play-by-play man Alex Stimson on 95.3 the Score. The Ems will be back at PK Park for 5 games against the Spokane Indians starting Thursday, August 8.
