EUGENE, Ore.– Emeralds starting pitcher Tayron Guerrero left the game with an injury in the 3rd inning. Reliever Michael Kelly inherited a bases loaded and nobody out situation and allowed two of the runners to score on after a walk and a wild pitch. Kelly would again get in trouble in the fourth inning after a Carlos Penalver leadoff double and a one-out walk to Jacob Hannemann. Daniel Lockhart drove in both runs with a single to left making it 4-0 Boise.

The Hawks started right hander Dillon Maples who picked up his first Northwest League victory throwing five innings with seven punch outs. The only real threat the Ems managed against Maples came in the 5th when three singles loaded the bases with two outs. Anthony Torres came to the plate for Eugene but he grounded the first pitch he saw to the third baseman to end the inning.

Boise added another run in the 5th when Jairo Gomez came out of the bullpen and surrendered a solo home run to Jacob Rogers. The Hawks got to Gomez again in the 7th after Yasiel Balaguert belted a leadoff double and Lance Rymel drove him in two batters later with a sacrifice fly.

Eugene would make one last push in the 8th when a pair of singles a wild pitch setup runners on 2nd and 3rd with two down. The Ems had the right man at the plate but Hunter Renfroe flew out to center field to strand the pair. Carlos Martinez came on to strike out the side in the 9th to give Boise their third straight shutout victory. The Hawks have now twirled six shutouts as a staff trailing just the Emeralds for the league lead with seven. Boise used three different pitchers Tuesday night who finished with a combined 12 strikeouts and no walks.

Hawks third baseman Kris Bryant went 0-5 with five strikeouts in his professional debut. The Cubs selected Bryant with the number two overall pick in the 2013 draft and recently signed him to a $6.7mil contract. All together Eugene’s staff struck out 15 Hawks but they also walked seven and hit a batter.
The same clubs are at it again Wednesday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm. It will be a Kids Eat Free Wednesday presented by Carl’s Jr. and Lone Pine Farms.
