EPD Fights Winter Break Burglaries

EUGENE, Ore. — The time of year best known for holiday cheer is also a prime time for grinches to strike.

Eugene police say property crime spikes during the weeks of winter break when many University of Oregon students head home.

So officers are meeting with those students to let them know what to do and what not to do while they’re gone.

“A lot of them are young, this is the first time they’re away from home, and it’s not always something that is on their radar. So our goal is to just get them to think about it,” said Debbie Janecek, EPD Crime Prevention Manager.

EPD launched the outreach effort last year and saw winter break burglaries cut in half.
