EUGENE, Ore. — The best candidate to fill Eugene’s only open council seat was up for debate Thursday night.
The seats were hard to come by as incumbent Betty Taylor faced off against Juan Carlos Valle.
The topics varied at the public forum, from downtown development to the environment.
Taylor and Valle tended to agree for most of the night except when it came to development tax breaks.
“We don’t like to have tax breaks. Some people get really upset when they hear we gave a 10-year tax break to a developer. They say I’m having a real problem paying my own taxes,” said Betty Taylor, Eugene City Councilor.
“If we do the right things and we establish a vision in community values in our community, we will also be able to attract those who want to invest in our community,” said Juan Carlos Valle, Eugene City Council Candidate.
Taylor’s platform includes the experience she’s gained while on city council. Valle is touting the fresh perspective he would bring if elected.
