Eugene Grandmother Honored as “CNN Hero”

EUGENE, Ore. — A 70 year-old Eugene grandmother is showing us all it’s never too late to make a difference.

Nancy Hughes was featured as a “CNN Hero” in its broadcast last Friday for the organization she founded to help those affected by traditional cooking methods in Latin American countries.

StoveTeam International helps replace dangerous open fires with a fuel-efficient cook stove.

It might sound like an unusual mission – but Hughes says it’s a vital cause.

“When a mom in the developing world has a baby she usually has it on the front and she’s leaning over an open-fire cooking. That’s the equivalent of smoking three packs of cigarettes a day for a baby,” said Hughes, StoveTeam International President and Founder.

StoveTeam International has helped build six factories in five countries and helped 280,000 people live healthier lives.
