THE DALLES, Ore. — [UPDATE] Skamania County Sheriff’s deputies found the body of 19-year-old James Hawkins, a resident of Eugene, just west of the Dalles dam on Sunday. Officials say the teen was swimming from the Oregon side of the bank to a small island but got caught by a swift current on the way back to shore.
A 19-year-old man from Eugene is missing after swimming in the Columbia River Sunday evening.
The man was swimming near The Dalles Dam when the people he was with said he was taken downstream by a strong current. 911 was called and emergency responders from Wasco County Sheriff’s Office and the Oregon State Police arrived on scene within a few minutes.
Several boats went out looking for the man and they continued searching until it was too dark to navigate the river.
The Wasco County Sheriff’s Office says rescue efforts will continue Monday with rescue members/volunteers from the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office and a dive team from Skamania County Sheriff’s Office.
