SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Just in time to get out of the pouring rain, a new indoor market has cropped up inside Springfield’s Gateway Mall.
David Wells has been a vendor himself for more than 15 years and says he was tired of not being appreciated. He launched the idea of a market inside a mall last year in Mesa, Arizona. It was the first of its kind in the U.S. He knew Eugene would be the perfect place for round two. Since opening at the beginning of the month, EuGenius! has gone from seven vendors to about 45 this weekend. The market, right by Sears, has the capacity to rent space to up to 55 merchants.
“Well they’re shocked. They’re like ‘wow’. The mall has really needed something like this, and this is completely different from anything I’ve ever seen. We want to be a community market. It’s a public market for small businesses. Most of these people have jobs during the week,” said David Wells, EuGenius! Market Manager
A month’s rent to use the space is $200. It’s $50 for a weekend and $25 a day. Vendors range from artists to farmers and everything in between. EuGenius! will stay put until the end of winter. They’re open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. If there is demand for the market to stay open year-round, Wells says he’ll renegotiate with the mall about staying.
