Facebook Tribute Honors Soldiers

EUGENE, Ore. — They say a picture’s worth a thousand words, and for Tira Howard that’s just enough to spread overseas.

“I like to think of it as spreading a network of goodness, so when people see them and click ‘like’ on them, it’s sending a good thought overseas not only to Logan my boyfriend but all the soldiers over there fighting for us,” Howard said.

Her project is a deployment countdown on Facebook. Every day Howard posts a new picture she designs for her boyfriend Specialist Logan Bromfield fighting in Afghanistan.

“It’s a great way for me to worry less and feel connected to him when we can’t talk for long periods of time,” she said.

Bromfield was deployed in early January and, of course, the first picture posted on day one. Friday was day 72.

Some pictures offer comedy, others camaraderie and, of course, there’s plenty of compassion.

“It was his first time going overseas and he was worried, and I wanted to ease his mind as much as possible while he is over there and I feel like that is part of my job as an Army girlfriend,” Howard said.

Her projects seem to be catching the eye of strangers here on the front lines.

“I just love that the people I am not friends with but that have somebody overseas can make their day a little brighter and let people know their soldier is supported by so many people,” Howard said.

This daily show of support for those half a world away offers a snapshot into what they’re fighting for.

When day 100 comes along with a 100th picture, Specialist Bromfield is supposed to return. That’s at the end of September.
