Fair Collects 27,000 Pounds of Food

EUGENE, Ore. — Food For Lane County took home a bounty of canned goods following Sunday’s collection at the Lane County Fair.

More than 27,000 pounds of food was collected.

Fairgoers got free admission by dropping off three cans of food. More than 21 giant boxes were filled–each capable of holding at least a thousand pounds.

Organizers say 39 percent of residents in Lane County are eligible for emergency food assistance, and the canned food will go a long way to alleviating their hunger, especially during the summer months when donations are down.

“It was a win-win. They get in for free, we get lots of food to feed our hungry neighbors, and we’re excited to see what the results will be. It feels good so far,” said Alicia Hines of Food For Lane County.

Last year, Food For Lane County gave away 7.8 million pounds of food.
