Family Relief Nursery Sees Increase in Demand

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. — It’s nearly time for the 2010 Great Rotary Duck Race Presented by First Tech Credit Union, a huge community event that helps prevent child abuse in Lane County. Money raised from the event goes to five local agencies working with families and children.

One of those agencies is the Family Relief Nursery. It’s based in Cottage Grove, but just opened up a satellite classroom in Drain, hoping to serve more families.

Since the economy took a hit, there are more families needing the kind of services the Family Relief Nursery provides.

“Families that haven’t needed to access [those services] before, whose benefits have gone away or are unemployed — perhaps homeless — are coming to our doors with stress,” says Heather Murphy, the Family Relief Nursery’s executive director. “We’re able to relieve some of that stress and help them learn how to relieve that and connect them with the resources.”
