EUGENE, Ore. — The announcement of Mark Helfrich as the Ducks new Head Coach on Sunday was not a complete surprise for fans. Many had expected this coming when Chip Kelly was first expected to go to the NFL right after the Fiesta Bowl.

With the NFL playoff games on Sunday, it was a big day for all football fans, especially those who support the Ducks in town. As the news was made official, most folks seemed happy with the decision.

For many, Chip’s quick decision change was a disappointment to say the least, but despite that, most fans were happy for him and were now simply focused on how the team is going to continue on without him. Who would take his place was the talk of the town all last week. Sunday was no different. Here are some of the things fans told us:

“I think we’re definitely taking a positive step forward by hiring our offensive coordinator.”

“I would have been worried if they didn’t move him to head coach, because then i’d be like who’s this guy? I don’t know what’s happening.”

“I think it’s a great move. Ducks are offense and we’ve got our offensive coordinator moving in and taking the spot.”

“It’s also gonna bring a little ease and comfort if you’re a Duck fan instead of bringing in someone at large.”

Helfrich’s name was in the mix the whole time. So, for many it was no big surprise.

Fans said the coaching staff is important, but so are the players and as long as they’re all in together, they’re already on their way to another great season.

Chip’s leaving is disappointing, and we’re sorry to see him go. It feels like we “almost” hit our goal. But I know we are truly grateful for what he has done for the program in his short time with us. You can’t argue with the results, and the promising future he has put in place for the Ducks. Chip loved Oregon and Eugene, and his decision wasn’t made lightly. Plus he was honest all along the way. He made the move to Philadelphia because it was what he needed to do at this point in his career – not because they made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. We wish him the best of luck and success, and thanks. We also wish the best for Mark Helfrich – not just to fill Chip’s shoes, but to make big footprints of his own. Go Ducks!

Truth is while most people are hopeful about Helfrich and wish him well, every Duck fan I know (quite a few) thinks that Chip Kelly’s fickle, flip-flop (first saying he was staying and then suddenly..leaving for the Eagles” was pretty classless. It’s not that he left..it’s the way he went about it that leaves a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths. When loyal fans, students and the team were all holding their breath and waiting for your decision, you don’t announce first you’re going to stay and THEN change your mind.
