EUGENE, Ore. — As the Ducks football team rushed home, fans rushed out to snag the first shipment of Fiesta Bowl Championship gear.
Thanks to Nike’s all-night printing, shirts arrived in Eugene within 24 hours of the Ducks Fiesta Bowl victory, but it took some extra effort from store staffs.
“As soon as they win, they start printing shirts up in Portland, and we drive up there to get them,” said Jordan Hall, employee at The Duck Store. “Our drivers left home at four o’clock in the morning to head up to Portland where they were being printed overnight.”
Both The Duck Store and Fred Meyer spent the whole day getting the shirts to all their locations across the state, but there’s not a ton to pick from. So far just Nike’s designs are available and local companies will likely trickle in over the next week or so. But even once all the options are in stores, though, merchandise managers say the most popular shirt is always the same every year–the ones the teams wear after the game.
“Still the locker room T-shirt, the one the players wear right after the game. The hat will most likely be the same way, just because when you’re watching that on TV it’s kinda cool to say this is what they players got,” Hall said.
That’s exactly what fans were thinking as many made trips just for the shirts that read “champions.”
“I came for a Duck shirt, and I saw on TV that Fred Meyer would be having them, so it’s my day off and I’m getting one,” said customer Barb.
It’s not just another bowl shirt to add to the closet, but a representation of adding another BCS victory on the resume, both for the team and for the fans.
“It’s a collectors item. This whole area won the Fiesta Bowl,” said Dave Nelson, Fred Meyer employee.
