FBI Releases Local Crime Stats

EUGENE, Ore. — The FBI just released its 2011 crime statistics for every city in the United States.

The numbers show, in Oregon, violent crime went down by 1.5 percent and property crime increased 2.5 percent.

Eugene saw a drop in violent crime and an increase in property crime.

A department spokesman says EPD hasn’t had a chance to analyze these stats yet but say its statistics can sometimes differ from the FBI’s.

“The FBI statistics are uniform and they’re uniform because they have to report on crimes for 50 states and the District of Columbia, and there are different laws and different definitions of those laws in different states,” said Melinda McLaughlin, EPD spokeswoman.

For instance, FBI stats show there were no murders in 2010 or 2011. EPD says there were homicides in 2011.
