Fire at Abandoned Eugene Building

EUGENE, Ore — Police are investigating a fire at an abandoned, city-owned building.

Just after 3 a.m. Monday a call came in that a fire had started at the Trudy Kaufman Senior Center on South Jefferson Street.

Police say they think the fire began when homeless people broke into the elevator shaft of the building and started to cook.

District Fire Chief Mark Grover says that the fire was contained in the shaft and didn’t spread to the rest of the building. No injuries or major damages to the building were reported.

Police continue investigating the possible break-in of the building.
