SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — An early morning fire forced employees at Pacific States Plywood mill in Springfield to evacuate the property.
Fire crews from Eugene and Springfield responded to a report of a fire on the roof of the mill just after 2 a.m. on Friday. They managed to extinguish the blaze with the help of factory workers from the mill, who used interior lines to access the water.
“Generally the mill workers protect their mill pretty well, until they’re forced out by the smoke,” said Springfield Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Brian Smith. “That’s when we’ll go in and take over until the smoke dissipates and then they’ll go back in and finish up.”
The fire damage was limited to the roof area. Officials did not know the full extent of the damage and were waiting until they could switch lights on near the roofing area.
