Investigators say the fire started outside of a small addition to the back of the house. By the time the arrived on scene, the fire had spread to the attached structure.
Firefighters had to use chainsaws to break down parts of the building’s walls to reach the fire, since it spread to the attic. “Attic fires are extremely hard to fight because they’re hard to gain access to, so we had to cut the game wind out of the structure and pull the wall off the outside to extinguish all of the fire,” said Battalion Chief Dana Burwell of the Springfield Fire Department.
No one was home at the time of the blaze. Firefighters estimate the fire caused about $25,000 of damage to the home.
