ROSEBURG, Ore. — Investigators are still trying to figure out what started a fire that destroyed Kuebler’s Furniture Store Sunday night.

The Roseburg Fire Department was called to the scene just after 5 p.m. When firefighters arrived, they saw heavy gray smoke coming from this corner of the building just off northeast Chestnut Avenue.

The fire marshal says several residents and nearby businesses called 911 after noticing that same smoke rising into the air. Even though witnesses said the fire department showed up almost immediately, it wasn’t fast enough to save the store. The flames quickly engulfed the entire building. All that’s left standing Monday were the cement walls.

While the building is valued at more than $500,000, they’re still adding up the full extent of the damage.

“It’s huge. It’s huge. We’re trying to assess it now. It’s kind of the unknown factors now about how much was in it. This is kind of a midway point between a couple of our stores, so how much was in it, we have to go through our records to find out how much was in the store,” said Bill Woodford, Corporate Marketing Director.

The family has two other stores. One in Salem and the other in Redding, California. The location in Roseburg has been around since 1992.

It took at total of 26 firefighters to get this fire under control. Several other agencies responded to help out including the local police department, local public works and power and gas companies.

The fire marshal says the investigation into where and what started the fire is still ongoing.
