Fire Displaces Three Eugene Families

house fireEUGENE, Ore. — Three families are out of their homes after an overnight fire in Eugene’s Whiteaker neighborhood.

The fire started around midnight, destroying a car and the front of a home converted into three apartments.

One woman was hospitalized. Her boyfriend says she just got out of surgery to repair torn ligaments in her wrist. He says the experience was terrifying.

“I tried to run outside and opened the door and the fire was all over the porch so I just jumped out the window, grabbed my son and her and we tried to get everyone else up, out of the house and make sure they were accounted for,” said Derik Hagaman.

Hagaman’s dog died in the fire. His upstairs neighbors are still looking for their cat.

Residents are not sure what, if anything, inside the house can be saved. The cause remains under investigation.
