Fire Restrictions for Central Oregon

PRINEVILLE, Ore. — Fire officials are restricting certain activities in Central Oregon due to extreme fire danger.

Starting Tuesday, August 21, open fires, including charcoal fires, will be prohibited, except in these campgrounds:

Ochoco National Forest: Barnhouse, Cottonwood Pit, Salter’s Cabin, Sugar Creek, Wolf Creek, Antelope Reservoir, Wildcat, Walton Lake, Deep Creek, Ochoco Forest Camp and Ochoco Divide.

Prineville BLM: Castle Rock, Still Water, Lone Pine, Palisades, Chimney Rock, Cobble Rock, Post Pile and Poison Butte.

Fire officials also say smoking is restricted to an enclosed vehicle or building, in boats on lakes and rivers, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is clear of all flammable material.

Firefighters are still working to put out five fires that were started by a thunderstorm Saturday morning, as well as the Buckhead, Evangeline and Bobby Fires. Two of the new fires–the Steeple and Rock fires–are zero percent contained. Firefighters say the other three smaller fires are in mop up and patrol status.

The Buckhead fire is 50 percent contained, and the Evangeline and Bobby fires are both 60 percent contained.
