Firefighters Make Way for Vet’s New Home

EUGENE, Ore. — A group of firefighters spent Sunday demolishing a Eugene home, but it wasn’t because the house was on fire.

The firefighters are volunteering with the Veterans’ Housing Project.¬†Once the house is done, a local vet will move in, but first it’ll go through some major renovations.

“Inside we’re taking down some of the interior walls, it’s an old 1930s, 1940s house and so it has lath and plaster so we’re removing all of that from the inside so they can rewire it and re-drywall it and kind of just update the whole thing,” said Capt. Mike Barnebey, Eugene Fire Department.

Some of the firefighters are new to the department, so this work served as training for them to understand how some older homes are built.
