PORTLAND, Ore. — Governor Kitzhaber ordered flags at public institutions to be lowered to half staff Monday following the death of a former Oregon governor.
Vic Atiyeh, Oregon’s Republican governor from 1979 to 1987, died at Portland’s Providence St. Vincent Medical Center just after 8 p.m. Sunday. Atiyeh was surrounded by friends and family.
A family spokesman says that Atiyeh was at home but had returned to the hospital Saturday due to shortness of breath and possible internal bleeding.
He was 91 years old.
