Florist Society Inducts Female President

EUGENE, Ore. — One of the oldest trade associations in America just elected its first female president, and she’s from Eugene.

The Society of American Florists was charted by an act of Congress in 1884. The group represents the entire floriculture industry in North America.

Shirley Lyons, owner of Dandelions Flowers and Gifts, is the first woman to hold this office in the 130-year history.

“I’m still a little surprised that in our history that we have not had a woman be president because actually our industry is made up of 50 to 60 percent of women being business owners and the leaders in our industry. So it was a real honor to be the first woman,” Lyons said.

One of Lyons first duties includes a trip to Columbia early next month to attend the bi-annual Proflora Fresh Flower Exhibition.
