Food Stamp Program Could See Cuts

EUGENE, Ore. — Big cuts could be coming to the federal food stamp program, and it would have a significant impact on people living in parts of Oregon.

House Republicans have passed a bill that would slash aid to about four million Americans over the next 10 years.

Those who use food stamps in Lane County would definitely feel the pinch if the proposed cuts are passed. More than 1 in 3 residents qualify for some sort of food assistance. That would mean approximately 20 fewer meals for a family of four every month.

The manager of Sundance Natural Foods says they see shoppers who use an Oregon Trail Card pretty regularly.

“People of all kinds really come into our store with food stamps. There isn’t a particular type. So I think food stamps benefits everybody,” said Tera Ponce, Sundance Natural Foods Manager.

She says it wouldn’t be smart to cut the food stamp program because so many people rely on it.

The legislation would also allow states to require food stamp recipients to be tested for drugs and to stop lottery winners from getting benefits.

So many Oregon kids are already going hungry. Shame on Republican politicians.

Shame on Republican politicians? NO! SHAME ON THE PEOPLE WHO ABUSE THIS PROGRAM. SNAP = Supplemental NUTRITION Assistance Program. I work at a local Kwikie Market and I see WAY too many under twenty year olds using Trail cards or California Advantage cards simply to buy Red Bull or Amp Energy drinks. NOT buying meals for themselves. I have even gotten “Snotty remarks” when I explain that our store does NOT allow Rock Star drinks on EBT.

And with the huge increase that this president put in you really thought we could sustain it forever? Foodstamps are a supplement not an income for an entire grocery bill. It needs to be ran more like WIC and then maybe the kids who we are trying to feed might (just might) get more than doritos and Tv dinners. Its called getting of your a– and cooking dinner.

  4. Ward Payne says:

Shame on the GOP. They use the excuse that some abuse the program, but wouldn’t it be better to feed a minority of deadbeats than to let children and seniors go hungry?

The GOP is always yammering about being Christian, but they don’t act that way: “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.” – Luke 3:11

Should any child go hungry? Absolutely not! However, the entire welfare system including food stamps is in need of a major overhaul. I personally know of a situation where a person is on welfare and uses food stamps so that they can afford their BMW payments. I am a generous person, but it simply is not fair for my hard earned money to make someone’s luxury car payments. The system was never intended to be a way of life for people. It was designed to help supplement during times of need. We need to stop taking so much from those who “work and contribute to our society” and handing it to those who “don’t.” Wake up America!
