House Republicans have passed a bill that would slash aid to about four million Americans over the next 10 years.
Those who use food stamps in Lane County would definitely feel the pinch if the proposed cuts are passed. More than 1 in 3 residents qualify for some sort of food assistance. That would mean approximately 20 fewer meals for a family of four every month.
The manager of Sundance Natural Foods says they see shoppers who use an Oregon Trail Card pretty regularly.
“People of all kinds really come into our store with food stamps. There isn’t a particular type. So I think food stamps benefits everybody,” said Tera Ponce, Sundance Natural Foods Manager.
She says it wouldn’t be smart to cut the food stamp program because so many people rely on it.
The legislation would also allow states to require food stamp recipients to be tested for drugs and to stop lottery winners from getting benefits.
