SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — With concussions being on the forefront of discussion in football the last couple of years, USA Football is taking a hands-on approach to educate coaches and players on safety.

The Heads Up Football Safety Clinic took place Sunday in Springfield. A dozen local youth football representatives attended. They learned about tackling techniques, equipment fitting, and concussion protocols.

“For the most part, we need to do what we can to reduce that and do a good job of teaching, teaching progression, and teaching tackling and again take neck and head injuries out of the game,” said Terry Summerfield, a regional master trainer for the Heads Up Football program.

Recently, the Oregon School Activities Association ruled to limit contact practices to three days a week to ensure safety.
