Former Springfield Mayor Turns 100

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Former Springfield mayor Claude Gerlach turned 100 Thursday and celebrated his birthday with leaders from the Springfield community.

He was all smiles during the milestone celebration. Friends sang him Happy Birthday and played him guitar.

“It’s a very significant recognition of Claude’s 100th birthday, which is a momentous event in anybody’s life. So we’re just happy to be able to celebrate that with Claude,” said former Rotary president Tom Cochran.

Gerlach served as Springfield’s mayor in the ’40s. He helped annex the area from 19th to 31st streets.
