Free Summer Lunches for Students

EUGENE, Ore. – Hundreds of kids who would not otherwise receive lunch will now have a  place to eat a meal during the summer months.

Food for Lane County kicked off its Summer Food Program on Monday at 60 sites around the county. The ten-week program provides kids who are unable to have a nutritious meal with free lunches. Dawn Marie Woodard of Food for Lane County says it is vital for all children to be fed properly. Woodard says many kids in the Eugene area are eligible for free or reduced meals at school. Once summer vacation begins, Woodard says many families are unable to suddenly budget for the extra meals.

Food for Lane County selected the free lunch sites based on surrounding schools, where at least 50 percent of the student population qualifies for reduced or free lunch. Kids who are 18 years old or younger are eligible to receive a free meal without registering. Click here for site locations.
