Gay Men Hold Mock Blood Drive

EUGENE, Ore. — Gay men are holding a mock blood drive throughout the nation Friday to raise awareness that they are not allowed to donate blood.

The Lane Blood Center says it’s interested in more people donating blood, but has to follow federal laws that say any man who’s had sexual contact with another man since 1977 cannot donate blood.

“On the one hand, the FDA is out there working really hard to protect the public safety. On the other hand, we have individuals who know that they’d be great blood donors,” said Doug Engel of the Lane Blood Center.

The blood center hopes in the future the screening process for donation targets specific questions about lifestyle choices instead of turning away gay men all together.
