EUGENE, Ore. — It seems like last year’s Great Rotary Duck Race just ended, but it’s already time to plan for this year’s.
Applications for groups that want funding from the race are now being accepted for the 2014 event. The deadline for applying is Feb. 3. Five organizations will be selected to receive about $50,000 each in proceeds — most of it coming from the sale of ducks.
To qualify, organizations must focus their work on preventing or treating child abuse. Usually, between 20 and 30 applications are received each year. Once the applications are received it’s up to the local Rotary presidents to decide.
“They review the applications and they whittle that down to about eight to ten and then they do site visits to each of those agencies,” Aimee Walsh, an organizer for the Race, said. “And then, based on those experiences and the applications, they pick five.”

The exact date of this year’s race hasn’t been chosen yet, but will happen in October.
