There is an exciting new test being rolled out in dentists' offices that could potentially have a huge impact on mouth cancer. It's called a velscope. It was recently cleared by the Food and Drug Administration.
It's a non-invasive way to detect oral cancers early, before they get to the advanced stage. It does so through a procedure known as "autoflourscents."
Doctors say every tissue in the mouth absorbs a certain amount of light and reflects a certain amount of light back at you. The light that is reflected back at you, is the color that we actually perceive.
Normal tissue reflects back green. Abnormal tissue hidden in the deep layers, which may be cancerous, shows up brown to black.
If a cancer is suspected, a quick biopsy is then performed.
