EUGENE, Ore. — Holiday travel is under way. If you’re flying out of the Eugene Airport, give yourself extra time.
AAA projects 93 million Americans will be traveling this holiday season–a slight increase over last year. The travel period kicks off Saturday and runs through January 1.
Driving is the preferred mode of transportation. Ninety percent of travelers will be hitting the road, each driving an estimated 700 miles.
Air travel is also up with 5.6 million Americans flying, but numbers are up significantly more at the Eugene Airport.
“The TSA is staffed up. Our airlines have staffed up. Hopefully as long as the weather cooperates across the entire country, then we should be in good shape,” said Cathryn Stephens, Eugene Airport Deputy Director.
Some flights to San Francisco already showed delays.
The Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers bowl games are helping to drive up airport numbers. The busiest day will be Dec. 26 with more than 1,800 passengers departing. That will make it the second busiest passenger day in the airport’s history. Other peak days include Sunday the 23rd, Dec. 27 and Dec. 30.
On peak days, the airport recommends travelers arrive two hours before their scheduled flight. Also give yourself extra time if there is inclement weather.
