EUGENE, Ore. — One lane of West Eighth Avenue between Washington and Jefferson street was shut down in downtown Eugene Thursday because of police activity.

Eugene police served a search warrant at a home in the 500 block of West Eighth Avenue. They say Brian Markowsky was taken to the hospital earlier Thursday after with a hand injury from a homemade explosive.

Police say he was uncooperative and a search of his home led to both legal and illegal fireworks that had been modified.

“Originally we evacuated nearby residents and we closed the street down because we didn’t know what level of danger was to the community, so we blocked it off to make sure they were safe,” said Officer Judson Warden, Eugene Police Department.

He was cited in lieu of custody for Manufacture of a Destructive Device.

Other charges may be pending.
