Hotel Guests Targeted by Scam

EUGENE, Ore. — A scam targeting hotel guests has been reported in Eugene.

The Eugene Police Department says scammers called at least one local hotel and asked to be transferred to phones lines of several rooms. When a guest would answer, the scammer pretends to be the front desk clerk. They tell the guest they’re having trouble with their credit card and ask to confirm their card number and security code.

A lot of times the guest’s phone doesn’t have caller ID. However, investigators say the calls made to the hotel were traced to an Alabama area code.

Detective Steve Williams says variations of this scam have been reported around the U.S.

If you see an suspicious activity in progress, call Eugene Police dispatch at 541-682-5111.
