EUGENE, Ore. — A fire broke out late Monday night on the 800 block of W. 5th near Monroe Ave.

The call came in just before midnight. More than two dozen firefighters responded to the home. Crews say when they arrived, the front porch and part of a car were engulfed in flames. They say the fire was blocking exits for three different apartments.

Neighbors grabbed a ladder and helped rescue one woman. Another woman made it out herself, and was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Neighbors say they were worried the fire would get out of control. “It was pretty high up. The car next to the house started burning as well, so we were kind of scared it might blow up,” says neighbor Gabriel Aguirre.

Fire crews say three families and five pets were displaced. One dog did not make it out alive.

The Red Cross is now helping those families. There’s no estimate on damage this morning. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
