Hundreds Seek Shelter from Hurricane

hurricane shelterHILO, Hawaii — The mayor of Hilo says more than 600 residents have gone to hurricane shelters, as Hurricane Iselle approaches Hawaii.

Rain is falling on the big island, with the outer bands of the storm bringing 65 mile-an-hour wind gusts.

A hurricane warning is in effect for the eastern shores of the big island.

Iselle could bring up to a foot of rain, life-threatening storm surges, flash floods and mudslides.

Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie has signed an emergency proclamation, giving the government access to the state’s disaster funds.
