IAAF Prepares for Track and Field Meet

iaafEUGENE, Ore. — The World Junior Championships for Track and Field are still four months away, but officials are already in town getting ready for the historic event.

The IAAF along with USA Track and Field representatives were alongside Eugene and Springfield mayors at Hayward Field Thursday afternoon talking about how excited they are for this huge event to take place. This will be the first time ever that the U.S. will host the event.

Speaker after speaker at Thursday’s conference said it was only fitting it would take place right here in Eugene, Oregon, also known as TrackTown, USA.

The World Juniors are a biennial competition for track athletes younger than 20 years old. IAAF officials called track and field the mother of all sports and say it will be a massive gathering and huge opportunity for the city.

“We’re talking about 180 nations who are going to come here to compete, and now any world championships, be it junior or senior, of any other sports doesn’t equal that. So this is the most universal event that you can ever think of,” said Essar Gabriel, IAAF General Secretary.

The six-day event is scheduled from July 22-27.
