Inmate Tries To Smuggle Pipe Bomb

EUGENE, Ore. — The Lane County Sheriff’s Office says a Springfield inmate tried to smuggle a pipe bomb into a crew truck Tuesday afternoon.

The LCSO says a deputy searching a road-crew truck discovered a suspicious device inside of a backpack belonging to one of the offenders.

It says the backpack was smuggled onto the truck by 19-year-old Benjamin Degroot.

Investigators say the deputy placed Degroot in handcuffs until additional units could arrive, including Eugene’s Explosive Disposal Unit.

The Explosives Unit confirmed the the backpack contained a pipe bomb and other incendiary devices. The explosives were disarmed by bomb squad members.

Degroot’s charged with 10 counts of Recklessly Endangering, one count for each person on the truck, Possession of a Destructive Device and Unlawful Manufacturing a Destructive Device.
