EUGENE, Ore. — March 8th is International Women’s Day, a holiday that’s been celebrated in the U.S. since the early 1900s.
Several groups across the Eugene and Springfield area are using this day to empower local women.
Combating domestic violence has been the common theme for a few different events happening in response to International Women’s Day. The Zonta Club, a global women’s organization, hosted its annual forum at the downtown Hilton, focusing on eliminating violence against women.
“Resources have been slashed for programs that work with victims of domestic violence, so we’re really wanting to let community members know what they can do in terms of helping get more funding, what they can do as volunteers,” said Marie Jackson, Zonta Club President.
There were also law enforcement leaders and other experts in the field who spoke to the crowd of about 100 attendees.
Starting at 8 p.m. Friday, the WOW Hall will have performances, a silent auction and a raffle to raise money for Womenspace.
Also Cozmic Pizza in downtown Eugene will having a blues concert that will also fundraise for the organization.
