Kicking Off “Empty Bowl Season”

throw a thonEugene, Ore. — Local artists are lending their hands for a good cause this weekend, hoping to help feed hungry people in our community.

It’s the annual Food for Lane County “Throw-a-Thon,” and dozens of potters are coming together at Clay Space to make hundreds of hand-crafted bowls for the upcoming Empty Bowl Sale.

Organizers say several agencies come together to make it all possible, from the artists’ labor to the donated clay. They say it’s a popular fundraiser that many people look forward to each year.

“There’s always a line,” Nolan Blancit, the Chairperson of Local Clay and one of the main organizers of the event. “Then they open the door, and people are going in, and their arms are just full of bowls, and so the community really supports this cause.”

The event is a major fundraiser for Food for Lane County, raising thousands of dollars each year since 1992.  The Empty Bowl Sale will be at the Food for Lane County Dining Room, downtown Eugene, on May 2, 2014.
