LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. — Democrat Gubernatorial Candidate, John Kitzhaber, gave his acceptance speech Thursday after Republican Chris Dudley conceded Wednesday night.
Dudley made the announcement at a news conference Wednesday around 7 p.m.
Until late Wednesday evening, the outcome was too close to call, but Kitzhaber managed to fight off challenge from Dudley, a former NBA player and political rookie.
Even though both candidates acknowledged the results of the race, ballots are still being counted. As of 4 p.m. Thursday, Kitzhaber received 680,443 votes, which is just 13,920 more than Dudley at 666,523 votes.
In his concession speech, Dudley said the race wasn’t even the biggest challenge.
“I wish him the best going forward, dealing with the new legislature, dealing with the issues that have to be addressed within our state, getting our fiscal house in order, private sector job creation, and going forward from there,” Dudley said.
Kitzhaber gave his acceptance speech Thursday morning in Portland.
