EUGENE, Ore. — With concerns over sanitation rising in downtown Eugene, Lane County administrators released pictures of people going to the bathroom just outside the courthouse.
One of the pictures included what appeared to be a bare-bottomed woman squatting over a concrete barrier. Many of the other pictures were too graphic to show.
Administrators wouldn’t link them to the SLEEPS group that returned to the Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza earlier this months, but say they are collecting evidence.
We showed the images to SLEEPS members. They say they were shocked. They reinforced the point their members are using the restroom.
SLEEPS says it highlights a much larger problem that’s evident when the region hosts large events that brings in a lot of people.
“When you have a lack of facilities downtown and have a lot of people in one place, this is what happens. That’s just what happens,” said Terrill Purvis, SLEEPS Organizing Member.
“At this point it’s really just about making sure things are clean and sanitary. It’s meant for free speech, not for camping,” said Anne Marie Levis, Lane County Spokesperson.
The city of Eugene blocked off another area last week because of human feces.
As for any action about potentially moving the demonstrators, the county says it’s documenting everything and is working on a plan.
