Lane County Documents Safety Concerns

EUGENE, Ore. — With concerns over sanitation rising in downtown Eugene, Lane County administrators released pictures of people going to the bathroom just outside the courthouse.

One of the pictures included what appeared to be a bare-bottomed woman squatting over a concrete barrier. Many of the other pictures were too graphic to show.

Administrators wouldn’t link them to the SLEEPS group that returned to the Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza earlier this months, but say they are collecting evidence.

We showed the images to SLEEPS members. They say they were shocked. They reinforced the point their members are using the restroom.

SLEEPS says it highlights a much larger problem that’s evident when the region hosts large events that brings in a lot of people.

“When you have a lack of facilities downtown and have a lot of people in one place, this is what happens. That’s just what happens,” said Terrill Purvis, SLEEPS Organizing Member.

“At this point it’s really just about making sure things are clean and sanitary. It’s meant for free speech, not for camping,” said Anne Marie Levis, Lane County Spokesperson.

The city of Eugene blocked off another area last week because of human feces.

As for any action about potentially moving the demonstrators, the county says it’s documenting everything and is working on a plan.

So the suggestion would be to put up a few of those “Clean Up After Your Pet” baggy dispensers like they have at dog parks and trailheads.

I understand that the acronym SLEEPS includes the word “entitled.” Keep dreaming. Get a job, find a legal place to sleep, and stop taking dumps in areas where taxpayers have to tread.

Lately, after the Liane Richardson scandal, I’ve been wondering just how low Lane County government can sink under the rule of the current triad of right-wing commissioners. Now we don’t have to guess anymore: they’re showing us exactly where their heads are at.

Defecating in public is definitely indecent, but not half as indecent as a county government that not only does not represent the hearts & minds of the people of Lane County, but wants to tweet us vulgarities and pretend that that is the sign of a responsible administration.

Dave, right-wing? I would have never guessed that. But I agree that this is ridiculous and should never be allowed! What does it demonstrate? Lack of respect for themselves as well as the rest of us. Kick em out!

“SLEEPS members … reinforced the point their members are using the restroom.”

So which is it? Did any of the “protesters” squat and take a dump on public property or not? You really can’t have it both not be a member of your group and try to cover your… well, you know what, with an excuse as to why it happened.

And as to the lack of facilities downtown, there are plenty. The area was not intended as a campground.
