Lane County Homeless Count

Handling HomelessnessEUGENE, Ore. — Despite a harsh winter, fewer people sought the help of Lane County homeless shelters.

Lane County Human Services released the results of this year’s sheltered homeless county. It looked at those staying in emergency shelters and transitional housing designated for homeless people.

The count, which included the 2013 count, showed more than 1,796 people are homeless in the county. The one-night homeless count was very close to the same number as last year.

This year’s count – as is allowed under the regulations – counted only those in shelters. Thus, the count of 796 represents those in shelter programs. This figure does not include those who were not in shelter on the one night of the count – many of whom are unable to get into shelters because they are typically full.

Next year the count will count both sheltered and unsheltered homeless.

KEZI – Can you fix the impression you left that we have less homeless because this count does not support your conclusion?

Thank you for the correction, though the story is still convoluted. What do you mean it included the figures from 2013?
