Lane Sheriff Weighs in on Gun Control

LANE COUNTY, Ore. — The Lane County Sheriff Tom Turner is now the latest Western Oregon sheriff to weigh in on the gun control debate.

Sheriff Turner’s stance though seems to be a little different from some of his colleagues.

He says as a sheriff he took an oath to uphold the Constitution and both reactions and decisions to issues that impact the rights of all people should be done with careful consideration.

He also says ultimately it is the Supreme Court, not any individual that determines the constitutionality of any law.

A number of Oregon sheriffs have written letters to Vice President Joe Biden demanding the Constitution, especially the Second Amendment be followed.

Sheriff Turner spoke on our morning show about this issue. Here’s a little of what he had to say.

“What I am going to do is I am going to base the sheriff’s office response on what actually happens as opposed to the speculation to what’s going to happen, and right now nothing affects any of these issues and that’s exactly what we are doing and we have other issues to focus on,” Turner said.

Ultimately he says his job is as a law enforcer not a lawmaker.
