UPDATE (11:53 p.m.): The man who died following a self-inflicted gunshot wound was a civilian employee of the Eugene Police Department, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.
EUGENE, Ore. — A large police presence in northeast Eugene Tuesday caught the attention of a lot of people.
The first call came in around 2:45 p.m.
Police responded to a report of a person behind the First Baptist Church off Coburg Road, reportedly with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Police Chief Pete Kerns said the person shot themself. That person was rushed to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield with a police escort.
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office is now investigating.
