Lawmakers Unveil Immigration Plan

EUGENE, Ore. — Congressional leaders unveiled a bi-partisan bill Tuesday addressing immigration reform.

It took months of behind-the-scenes negotiations to get the draft together. President Obama called on the Senate to quickly pass the bill.

In Eugene, local organizations also support the so-called Gang of 8’s bill.

“Our community has waiting for too many years to be at this point. It is important to support those people that may not have documentation to continue to contribute to the economy and to our society,” said Juan Carlos Valle, President of LULAC.

The bill would create a 13-year path to citizenship for the 11 million immigrants in the U.S. Illegally but only after steps are taken to secure the border. It would also remake the nation’s legal immigration system.
