LCC Breaks Ground on $35M Remodel

6-16 GROUNDBREAKINGEugene, Ore. — A new beginning of sorts Monday at Lane Community College, just as students left for summer break.

The school celebrated the groundbreaking for its new Center Building, which is part of a $35 million remodeling project.

The Center Building, home to food services, the campus library, and book store, has gone largely unchanged since it was built 50 years ago. In all, more than 100,000 square feet of space will be remodeled or added.

“Not only to transform student’s lives by giving them all of the resources that they need to be successful, but also to transform the campus by taking down the concrete terraces and opening up the building to the campus,” said Mary Spilde, president of Lane Community College.

The Titan Book Store will reopen in a new location in time for next winter term. The entire remodeling project is scheduled to be completed by January 2016.

Thanks to the Lane County voters who supported the bond measure which is making this possible.

It is distressing to see this type of activity going on with LCC when all the reports so far this year are all about LCC’s “budget problems” that cause staff and teaching staff layoffs, cancellation of courses (and as I recall entire programs), shortened campus hours for necessary student access such as the library and study amenities. Then there is that extremely high compensation of LCC’s top administrator. So. How does this look to outsiders/taxpayers? It looks like administrators and fancy remodeling jobs (and fancy new buildings) are all being funded – with taxpayer dollars I might add – to the actual detriment of those LCC purports to serve. LCC needs to take a course in Econ 101 and learn about cash flow management and why new toys and an obscenely overcompensated person at the top are not compatible with LCC’s claimed “mission.”

Yeah – I guess Hitler’s Bunker Architecture is no longer in vogue. Whoever designed this atrocity should be tarred and feathered.

And this is why I transferred out of LCC. Overcharging students, cutting so many classes to the bare minimum. You’re a community college, yet you got all evening classes and fail to offer us full-time working adults evening classes to complete our degrees. the has to be the most a*s backward school I have seen.

Just say no to future bond measures to support LCC, and Libraries for that matter. Hasn’t the internet made libraries obsolete yet.
