Lime Prices Affect Local Businesses

LIME PICTUREEUGENE, Ore. — Some bars and restaurants are feeling the squeeze, now that the price of limes is soaring, and they’re passing some of the cost on to customers.

Owners of The Barn Light in downtown Eugene say a case of limes used to cost $20 to $30. Now it’s closer to $130. They’ve been informing employees and customers about the spike, and they’ve made changes to their drinks.

“Whenever possible, substituting lemons for limes, especially for garnishes, and we’ve also, for very lime juice heavy drinks like margaritas, included a one dollar surcharge for that,” said Thomas Pettus-Czar, Owner of The Barn Light.

He says customers have been understanding.

Analysts say lime prices are up because of bad weather in Mexico and violence caused by cartels.
