EUGENE, Ore. — Lane County has one of the highest rates of children in foster care in the state of Oregon.
With nearly a thousand children currently in the foster care system, National Child Abuse Prevention Month hits close to home.
The Eugene organization Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) says oftentimes child abuse is not physical.
“The number one reason why children come into care is neglect. It’s that their basic needs are not being met. Their parents are unable to meet their basic needs,” said Megan Shultz, CASA Executive Director.
CASA is in desperate need of volunteers who can work as an advocate for a foster child in Lane County.
