Local Iraq Veterans Seek Support

EUGENE, Ore. — While the debate continues about the war on Iraq, one thing is certain: veterans of the Iraq War are in need of assistance.

Veterans services advocates say nearly a third of all veterans in Lane County served in Iraq, and the weapons used in the conflict made a severe impact on those vets. Twenty to thirty percent of them suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Veterans services says that Iraq vets often suffer from severe hearing loss and orthopedic problems when they come home.

Advocates add that soldiers often aren’t trained on how to deal with returning home and that many are simply unaware of the benefits they’re entitled to.
