Local Residents Remember 9/11

Tuesday marks the 11th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Local veterans and other groups are hosting events to remember those who died that day.


Lane County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Loren Corner will play Taps in front of the Lane County Jail, Tuesday. Sergeant Corner will play four times at the jail’s flagpole at 5:46 a.m., 6:03 a.m., 6:37 a.m. and 7:03 a.m., in recognition of when the four planes crashed in on September 11th, 2001.


McKenzie-Willamette is honoring local first responders at its Local Heroes Celebration on Tuesday, September 11  from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event happens at McKenzie-Willamette, located at 1460 G Street, Springfield, on the East Lawn.


A watermelon feed and seed-spitting contest will precede the annual candlelight vigil at the Benton County Veterans Memorial at 1100 N.W Kigs Blvd. The watermelon feed and seed-spitting contest will start at 7 p.m. and local members of the fire department, police department, state police and military are expected to compete. The candlelight vigil is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and candles will be provided, but attendees are welcome to bring their own. In addition, local musicians will perform patriotic songs and pastor Steve Minton will serve as chaplain.

Roseburg & Sutherlin

The Ageless Aviation Dreams “Day of Recognition” will feature dream flights for 12 military veterans in a 1943 Boeing Stearman aircraft. There will also be a hero recognition ceremony for veterans and first responders. It happens Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Roseburg Regional Airport South Ramp (Airside of Aviation Suites). Enter through gate at North side of Aviation Suites at the Roseburg Regional Airport. This free event is open to the public.

Firefighters and Paramedics from Douglas County Fire District 2 will host a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony ceremony  at 11:00 a.m. in front of the Sutherlin Police Department. Vice President Darlene Daniels of Lodge 1946 Omaha Woodmen Life Insurance Society assisted by Chief of Police Kirk Sanfilippo and Fire Chief Greg Marlar will lay a wreath in memory of the events and victims of 9/11/2001, and Army Veteran and long time Sutherlin Volunteer Firefighter Scott Seakins who passed away recently.

Another ceremony will take place at the Roseburg Veterans Administration (VA) National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. and includes a military memorial ceremony with folding of the flag by an Honor Guard.


American Legion Post 10 will hold a 9/11 ceremony starting at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Linn County Courthouse. The ceremony will include a 21-gun salute, Taps, and the ringing of the fire engine bells. Guest speakers include Albany Fire Chief John Bradner, Linn County Commissioner Roger Nyquist, and keynote speaker Judge Judge Egan. The ceremony will last about an hour.


In remembrance of September 11, 2001, Governor Kitzhaber has ordered for all American flags to be flown at half-staff on Tuesday.
