COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. — Hundreds of Lorane community members are remembering the founder of their own fire department. Chief Joe Brewer died in his sleep in December. He was 84 years old.
The auditorium at Cottage Grove High School was with around 400 community members Saturday afternoon, as those who knew Chief Joe Brewer paid their respects.
Chief Brewer served as a firefighter for 47 years and was the Chief of the Lorane Fire Department for 23 years. During that time he founded the department, raised a family, and volunteered at other places in town including the Lorane Grange.
Family and friends said he was extremely genuine, hardworking, and always had a smile on his face.
“Joe was the friendliest and kindest chief I ever met. Everybody in the fire community knew and respected Joe. Mostly they liked him,” said Chief Tom Soward, Lorane Fire Department.
The Lorane Fire Department is named after Brewer. During the memorial service, he also received military honors because he served in the Korean War.
